Eriko Muraki

Here, but not here.

Eriko Muraki

Working across photography, video, text, zines, and installation, I explore moments in everyday life when perception begins to shift.

Using encounters with ordinary places and the body—such as legs and hands beneath water, semi-basements, corridors, and housing complexes—as points of departure, I seek ways to fix within my work the sensation of being “here, yet not here.”

Solo exhibition scheduled for September 2026, Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, Tokyo.

Artist Statement

My practice begins with the question of how moments when familiar things suddenly feel slightly unfamiliar can be given lasting form through art.

I am interested in moments when everyday places or even my own body unexpectedly feel as though they belong to someone else.

The origin of this practice lies in a childhood experience. When I covered my face with my finger in a group photograph, the scene in the picture no longer felt like my own memory, but someone else’s. That sensation has remained with me, later reappearing in experiences such as seeing my own legs underwater as if they belonged to another person, or encountering familiar landscapes that suddenly feel subtly estranged. These experiences continue to shape my photography, video, and installations.

I am not interested in reproducing what I see. Instead, through photography, video, painting, writing, ZINEs, and installation, I seek to translate these perceptual experiences into forms that can be shared with others.
